Ethernet over Coax
Interesting post from fellow DOCSIS technologist on CMTS vs. EOC (Ethernet over Coax). Check out the post and his blog.
Both of them are best, choices however depend on ones technical capability of using the device and the budget allocated for the implementation of cable internet service. The CMTS The CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System) requires a well trained IT-personnel to operate the device and a highly skilled engineer or technician capable of maintaining the 2-way CATV distribution plant for a stable internet delivery. The CMTS is set to a capacity ranging … Read More

Love the evolution of site Brady; could you also in your blog touch on more issues involving modem registration and some of the reasons why modems fall into the offline state? I work at a Cable ISP (first line support) and that is the issue that we touch on the most with our subscribers.
The usual senario would be the modem dropping offline and upon reset the modem would range to either R1 or R2 which involves RF plant issues. There are a lot of us here that would like to see some of the dynamics of that issue. If you already have a blog entry on this please point that out to me.
Peace Out!!!

Hey KEG,
Thanks for the feedback on the site.
Oh, the dreaded R1, R2, etc. or init (r1), init (r2), init(rc)… issues. You are correct, for init(r1) this is usually an RF plant issue where their is too much loss in the upstream and the cable modem is at maximum transmit power, but just can’t get within the window that the CMTS wants (typically +/6 dBmV, but this is configurable). init(r2) means that the CMTS received the ranging request and is making power, frequency, timing and possibly equalizer adjustments. If stuck in this state, it could still mean that the modem can’t adjust one or more settings enough – often the RF power level.
But this is hardly enough information and I have spent hours staring at the different init() error messages pulling out my hair. Sometimes the solutions are simple, sometimes more complex. This one definitely deserves an article on its own so give me a day or two to knock something out.

In my opinion, just two questions are in the cable modem world.
The most simple question: why does the cable modem online succesfully.
The most difficult question: why does not cable modem online.
Jason,
Very simple questions, very complicated answers.
I like the concept, however. It would make for a couple of very good articles based the premise of your post. I will add this to my list of “articles to write”.
Thanks,
-Brady
Really good product. I like the concept…….
