Happy Friday Everyone. Today is March 15 and this is episode 46 of Get Your Tech On, our show on All Things DOCSIS. I’m Brady Volpe, Founder of The Volpe Firm and Nimble This.

With us today is:

John Downey, CMTS Technical Leader at Cisco.

Larry Wolcott PNM Round Table with special guests Larry Wolcott (SCTE Member of the year) Leader at Comcast’s Next Generation Technology Group

Jason Rupe Principal Architect, Wired, R&D of CableLabs.

Today’s topic is a follow up on last year’s popular PNM show and also a tie in to Broadband Library which heavily showcased PNM. I’m going to give Larry, Jason and myself some time to discuss our articles today and then open it up to a larger conversation about PNM in the industry today.

But first…

<Questions>
1. The next questions are off a string and we did edit it a bit. Super nice guy but we really think it’s important to also address that there are skeptics still in the cable space and let’s address some of their questions, comments and concerns.

2. I get the idea behind PNM, my thoughts are that the cable industry needs to think much more about the layers above the PHY layer (layer 4 and above). The idea that is being sold here is that a physical issue, when fixed, means everything else above it (the customer experience) is good. Why don’t we provide / encourage / promote tools that show packet loss / increased latency / buffering video because that definitely is customer impacting.

3. The cable industry has been doing the same thing for the last 25 years (FEC,SNR,MER) and still hasn’t come up with a solution to reducing inbound calls and faults. I get the whole proactive / good practice approach, but judge my comments against the pressures of finite resources and decreasing opex.

4. PNM is being seen / touted by some in the industry as the silver bullet to identify all those ills we have and those people are putting to one side the other things that we can definitely measure the impact to the customer.
