10 GiG Over Coax

Happy Friday Everyone.  Today is May 18th and this is episode 39 of Get Your Tech On, our show on All Things DOCSIS.  I’m Brady Volpe, Founder of The Volpe Firm and Nimble This.  With us is, John Downey, “The American Van Damm of Cable”.   John is also CMTS Technical Leader at Cisco Systems, welcome John.   And Daniel Etman Owner and Innovator of Enrest in Belgium – although he would be wearing Orange if his Dutch team had made it to the World Cup.  Don’t feel bad neither did the USA. Questions:

  1. What, 10Gbps over Coax? How does that work and does that not impact my existing services?
  2. What is the use case for 10GIG over Coax, why would I use this?`
  3. How would I use this for FTTX?
  4. How would I implement this in a HFC network?
  5. So this technology is a way to implement deep fiber RPHY without the need to re-segment and pull new fiber?
  6. What are the typical use cases?
  7. What spectrum are you using and what modulation?
  8. Is there any impact to the subscriber or existing services such as DOCSIS or Video?
  9. How does this reduce cost for MSO`s
  10. Did you have any error correction capabilities?
  11. What kind of power does the solution need.
  12. What about the actives and passives?
  13. Potential negatives.
    1. The solution is a point2point one, that means a special solution is needed to allow multi branch architectures.
    2. If you hit a passive you need to replace it in order to support the higher frequencies. Actives need to be bypassed.
  14. What other technology trends do you see moving forward?
