The Future of Test Equipment

2014-03-19T11:54:39-04:00March 19th, 2014|

The Future of Test Equipment and the Role of Proactive Network Maintenance At a recent convention, I had the opportunity to listen to Daniel Howard, CTO of the SCTE, speak about how Comcast is using, Rohde & Schwarz in conjunction with their PNM (Proactive Network Maintenance) Scout Flux system.  This highlights that although PNM is the future of troubleshooting cable plant problems proactively, high-end test equipment will still be needed.  One common thread across the industry that I like to re-iterate is that the cable plant does not

DOCSIS Pre-Equalization Video

2022-01-07T09:01:46-05:00February 5th, 2014|

DOCSIS Pre-Equalization Video This DOCSIS pre-equalization video will cover some important items.  DOCSIS Pre-Equalization is something that every cable provider should know about. With a simple line of code on the CMTS, you can achieve an immediate and significant improvement in your upstream signal levels. Pretty important stuff, so we’ve tapped Brady Volpe, one of the foremost experts on the subject. On Tuesday, February 4th at 4:00 PM EST, Brady will be chatting live on this page with Scott Helms, ZCorum’s VP of Technology, about the benefits of pre-equalization.

PNM and HFC Readiness for DOCSIS 3.1 – CCTA 2014

2021-12-15T10:11:40-05:00February 3rd, 2014|

Daniel Howard, CTO of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) presented at this years CCTA on "HFC Readiness for DOCSIS 3.1". Daniel had a presentation that couldn't be beet and held the attention of the audience. Key topics he covered were the rapid growth of Internet traffic, cable operator's desire to extend the life of coax cable at least another 20 years, PNM and the realization that 4096-QAM is a reality in the cable plant.

CED – Proactive Network Maintenance

2014-01-30T10:36:45-05:00January 30th, 2014|

Proactive Network Maintenance ZCorum debuts DOCSIS upstream tester ZCorum has introduced a new tool that analyzes DOCSIS pre-equalization data, which cable operators can use to identify upstream impairments. The company’s Pre-Equalization Analyzer uses technology from Nimble This to analyze the pre-equalization data from cable modems. Nimble This is a collaboration of software developers with The Volpe Firm, headed by Brady Volpe. The new ZCorum tester can not only identify upstream impairments, but also determine the location of the impairment and the severity of the impairment. This allows operators

DOCSIS 3.1: Modulation Options and Impacts – Part Two

2023-02-17T13:02:40-05:00January 22nd, 2014|

What’s Next for DOCSIS 3.1 Modulation Options and Impacts DOCSIS 3.1 modulation - Many wonder how today’s networks will support high order modulations such as 4096-QAM. There are two technologies in the DOCSIS 3.1 standard that will enable this without requiring changes to existing outside plant. The first is Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). This is a complex word for taking many small QAM channels, like 25 kHz instead of 6 MHz, and placing them very close together. OFDM also has dynamic properties. If you have a block
