DOCSIS 3.1 Downstream and Upstream Testing and Throughput
Episode 24 Hosted by Brady Volpe of the Volpe Firm, this video / podcast has a focus on the DOCSIS 3.1 downstream and upstream with a practical review of the latest advancements in DOCSIS 3.1 and practical applications in production systems. Guests include John Downey, CMTS Technical Leader at Cisco Systems, Jeff Riddel, Solutions Architect at Cisco Systems and Jason Miller Technical Marketing Engineer at Cisco Systems.
Hello Everyone. Today is November 17th and this is episode 24 of our shows on All Things DOCSIS. I’m Brady Volpe, Founder of The Volpe Firm and Nimble This.
For today’s show we going to cover DOCSIS 3.1 downstream and upstream as our main topic.
So starting right out of the gate…
- John and Jason, I heard Cisco had a few demos at SCTE Expo this year. Care to share…..
- DOCSIS 3.1 DS of course, but that’s old hat – we still only support 1, 192 MHz block per port, but we showed 2 blocks per port cross-bonded with 32 SC-QAMs for X speed across 2 modems.
- DOCSIS 3.1 US OFDMA with X speed can do 96 MHz, but limited by 85 MHz filter.
- Remote Phy using a 1 RU shelf.
- Virtual CMTS, which is really an extension of remote phy without a CMTS now.
- Jason, I heard you recently did some DOCSIS 3.1 Downstream testing in a customer’s plant.
- Do they have “paying customer” or just friendlies (Employees)?
- Did you have any “ah ha” moments or profound results?
- What spectrum do you see customers leaning toward?
- Jeff, I remember licensing on the uBR10K and RFGW-10 was per linecard, how is it different on the cBR-8 and DOCSIS 3.1?
- Any updates on video, encryption?
- John, what keeps you up at night, specifically talking about DOCSIS and customers….
- CMTS operational monitoring and proving modems are doing what you expected them to be doing IRT to US and DS bonding, service flows in correct BG, load balance, proactive monitoring, etc
- John, What happens when more RF on a single connector?
- Max output levels/ch drop according to DRFI, so some splitting combining or even cabling may need to change.
- Tilt, spectrum allocation, AGC pilot, Leakage pilot, etc OOB signaling?
- So, you told me all you guys are in RTP doing some testing, can you share?
- We are helping to setup an HFC network that Bill Halvorson is spearheading to simulate issue and use our PNM app. 85 MHz US with EDR, 1×2 design for better segmentation. FST with inverse EQs for high value taps and EQs for low value taps. High output using GaN vs GaS.
- Remote phy with GS7000 node and RPHY module between ATL and RTP, 85/102 removable diplex filters, 1.218 GHz DS, seizer less screws, analog overlay if needed,
- DOCSIS 3.1 Update – Downstream and Upstream testing, 60 MHz between 10-70 MHz. 1K QAM.
- Follow up DOCSIS 3.1 Update – Downstream and Upstream testing for graceful profile management.
- What’s coming up for you guys:
- Jeff in Cisco Live Berlin in Feb
- John and Jason continue D3.1 support
