Welcome to the future of lightning-fast internet connectivity! In this video, Brady Volpe and John Downey will dive into the exciting world of DOCSIS 3.1 and DOCSIS 4.0, showcasing how cable operators can harness these game-changing technologies to provide unparalleled speeds and robust networks for their customers. We’ll explore the key differences between the two versions, reveal the technical advancements that make DOCSIS 4.0 a true revolution in the broadband landscape, and share valuable insights on how cable operators can seamlessly transition from DOCSIS 3.1 to 4.0. Join us as we discuss the latest updates on DOCSIS 3.1 and 4.0. Whether you’re a cable operator looking to stay ahead of the competition or a curious tech enthusiast eager to learn about the next generation of broadband technology, this video is a must-watch!

Brady Volpe and special guest John Downey of Cisco we’ll be discussing:

What’s Comcast up to?

  • 100% digital virtualized architecture
  • ML and AI will run network
  • Digital nodes sit a few hundred feet from the customer providing high quality service
  • 83,000 digital nodes deployed, with 1,500 nodes/week being deployed
  • 11M+ homes already upgraded
  • Over next 6 years will triple amount of capacity, but will reduce power consumption by 50% using virtualization
  • Offers 2 Gbps DS / 200+ Mbps US (x7-x10 Upload speeds)
  • DOCSIS 4.0 —> 8.5 Gbps down / 5 Gbps tested in Denver with FDX
  • Comcast Octave – PMA – AI engine that looks at 4,000 data points and makes PMA update every 20 minutes, gives 45% increased upstream capacity
  • XMF – in headend, detects fiber breaks within 120 seconds
  • DOCSIS 4.0 FDX smart amplifier platform provides real time visibility into every RF span
    • Self setting, no pads or EQs
  • Deployed AQM during Covid, has done a hackathon and shown very good gaming performance with low latency

The Evolution of Broadband Services

  • 80% of consumers will to pay $5-$20 / month for latency consistency
  • Using CPE with Ultra edge compute to donate for altruistic purposes, i.e. cancer research
  • With AI & ML gave a 70% accuracy that customer was going to call and complain within next 48 hrs
  • Selling services to employer, such as car data, appliance data, etc. so that services are adopted
  • Moving beyond bandwidth will become important to adopt services
  • Fast Cloud storage requires fast and reliable networks

Migrating from DOCSIS 3.1 to 4.0

  • How much Runway is left in in DOCSIS 3.1
    • DOCSIS 3.5 – lot of life in DOCSIS 3.1, Primary objective for Charter
    • Most of Europe is already 1.2 GHz, less urgency in Europe to move to DOCSIS 4.0
    • US has more urgency since they have not upgraded
    • customers are fast tracking to upgrade to mid-split
    • 1 modems are able to support multi-gigabit speeds down
    • Europe has been high split for several years and US headed that way too
  • Tipping point for DOCSIS 4.0
    • Has traditionally been more competition driven
    • 0 is basically DOCSIS 3.1 with more spectrum
    • BW vs reduction in bill, subscribers will take reduction in bill, esp above 500 Mbps
    • Congestion relieve and speed tiers are two goals
  • 0 modems will go out and run as DOCSIS 3.1 devices for some time
  • DOCSIS 4.0 modems have Alignment with Wifi 7 and DOCSIS 4.0
  • 396 MHz is industry condenses on split for ultra-high splits
  • Cost of DOCSIS 4.0 CPE – Liberty Global CTO thought cost should be the same
    • 10 Gbps Ethernet ports in DOCSIS 4.0 are expensive
    • Wifi 7 is expensive in DOCSIS 4.0 modems
    • Likely DOCSIS 4.0 will cost more
    • 1 will not pollute DOCSIS 4.0 network, so operators can always buy D3.1 modems if cost is too high
  • DOCSIS 4.0 Product readiness
    • End of year, first part of next year, will be rolling out 1.8 GHz product
    • Many operators will be looking vCMTS product
    • Late ’24, early ’25 timeframe will have a DOCSIS 4.0 vCMTS ready to go, later in year ready with CPE
    • Comscope evolving E6000 to support cloud for virtualization
    • CPE coming after vCMTS
