Happy Friday Everyone.  Today is September 28th and this is episode 42 of Get Your Tech On, our show on All Things DOCSIS.  I’m Brady Volpe, Founder of The Volpe Firm and Nimble This.  With us is, John Downey, the Van Dam of Cable.   John is also CMTS Technical Leader at Cisco Systems, welcome John.  Also with us is Tal Laufer who in her sleep orchestrates 1’s and 0’s into beautiful broadband magic, Tal is also Director, Product Manager Network Intelligence and Automation at ARRIS, welcome back Tal.

Today’s topic is a follow conversation on Orchestration and R-PHY.

But first due to hurricane Florence we had to cancel the last hangout and we want to send out our best wishes to everyone still recovering from the storm. John your live in North Carolina, any updates?

So let’s move into our main topic, we are in the final weeks before Cable Tec Expo in my home city of Atlanta, GA. Tal and John will you both be there?

Tal I’ll start with you How are orchestration and virtualization going to change our cable industry (if at all ?)?

Tal Points:

    • What is the most important role of orchestration in our current cable world? What is it going to be tomorrow?
    • How is the orchestration evolution accepted within different customers all over the world?
  • What are standardization committees that are active in the area? Is there a unified path? (answer – not really).

JD Points:

Dynamic latency measurement (DLM) for redundant fiber paths, any CIN > 100 miles, and/or unknown delays in routers/switches

  •        DOCSIS predictive scheduler (DPS) for any CIN > 100 miles and worried about latency and/or US speed especially from a D2.0 CM or D3.0 that registers incorrectly because of power level issues.  Also DS TCP flows like ABR OTT video because if US ack latency
  •        Potentially MTU of 2000B
  •        No oversubscribed CIN
  •        Daisy-chaining & redundancy in CIN – cost and complexity; SFPs, fiber or copper jumpers,…
