  • Sticking with 1.5 Gbps total downstream capacity in a node with 100 subscribers at 1024-QAM OFDM – let’s do the math:
    • 1 Gbps downstream per sub
    • 25x oversubscription
    • 25 x 1.5 Gbps = 37.5 Gbps capacity
    • 37.5 / 100 = 375 Mbps dedicated downstream
  • Typical Netflix Stream: 3 GB/hour for HD or 50 Mb/min or ~8 Mbps
    • Average of 2 streams per home = 16 Mbps
    • 250 homes / node = 4 Gbps
  • thoughts on how many DOCSIS 3.1 CPE justify trading DOCSIS 3.0 spectrum for DOCSIS 3.1 spectrum
  • should you upgrade all of your modems to DOCSIS 3.1?

    • Better efficiency
    • Faster speed and larger coverage
    • Uses OFDM at up to 1024-QAM (previous was 256-QAM) – 25% faster
    • Can send and receive data at the same time
    • Supports more devices on the network at the same time
    • 4x longer symbols and 160 MHz (previously 80 MHz) channel bandwidth
    • But! – your computers and phones also need to support Wifi 6

Wi-Fi 6 is the next generation standard in WiFi technology. Wi-Fi 6 also known as “AX WiFi” or “802.11ax WiFi” builds and improves on the current 802.11ac WiFi standard. WiFi 6 was originally built in response to the growing number of devices in the world. If you own a VR device, multiple smart home devices, or simply have a large number of devices in your household, then a WiFi 6 router might just be the best WiFi router for you. In this guide, we’ll go over WiFi 6 routers and break down how they’re faster, increase efficiency, and are better at transferring data than previous generations.

Cable modems with Wifi 6:

  • Netgear Nighthawk CAX80 DOCSIS 3.1 WiFi 6
  • Arris Surfboard AC2350
