Full Duplex DOCSIS

Putting the symmetry in DOCSIS and enabling increased bandwidth and speed.  Why does symmetry matter you ask, especially in broadband? Well you have symmetry in fiber. Big deal, right? Yes, now FDX allows for coax to do something that it could never do before, have symmetry just like fiber. So FDX continues the alphabet soup of our industry but through symmetry allows for increased broadband and speed in coax. So let’s take another bite of the alphabet soup together. In my last article I covered remote PHY (R-PHY)

2018-02-14T13:11:22-05:00February 14th, 2018|

DOCSIS 3.1 has gone from concept to silicon.  Proactive Network Maintenance (PNM) is emerging as a staple in the industry, and we are seeing the cable rapidly evolving into an app-driven industry.  It’s an exciting time to be in cable! In my last article I mentioned how ‘everything is becoming an app’.  This has been mentioned recently in numerous articles.  The typical subscriber - maybe even you - really likes the concept of apps.  Think of how Netflix has transformed our industry.  Netflix is really an app that

Unmanaged DOCSIS WiFi – The Last 100 Maddening Feet

2017-06-12T07:59:30-04:00June 12th, 2017|

Yeah Baby - Unmanaged DOCSIS WiFi - The Last 100 Maddening Feet   One Billion dollars plus is spent yearly on residential unmanaged DOCSIS WiFi accounts, according to CableLabs.  You heard me right and I’m not quoting Austin Powers here.  How is this possible?  Okay, let’s review: Subscriber’s unmanaged WiFi networks are causing a ton of customer service representative (CSR) calls and over $1 Billion plus dollars in multiple-system operator (MSO) spending.  Subscriber unmanaged WiFi is a big dollar and optics issue for the industry.  Most subscribers do

DOCSIS 3.1 – CCAP and Cable Modems the New Rock Stars in Test

2021-11-24T09:38:45-05:00March 2nd, 2017|

DOCSIS 3.1 - BOOM - Drop the Mic.  CCAP and Cable Modems the New Rock Stars in Test We have always known that DOCSIS rocks but it is just so much cooler than we all thought.  In the Winter edition of Broadband Library, I talked about how DOCSIS® 3.1 were beating expectations and performing exceptionally well in production environments.  In this article, I want to focus on how the DOCSIS 3.1 specification outlines the test side, which enables operators to maintain deployed systems.  Yes, you read that right,

DOCSIS 3.1 Beating Expectations, Working and Ready for Service Now

2016-12-19T11:18:36-05:00December 19th, 2016|

DOCSIS 3.1 Beating Expectations, Working and Ready for Service Now At this years SCTE Cable Tec Expo, several large MSOs, such as Comcast, made statements that DOCSIS 3.1 is working and it is working with great results.  Only the downstream OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) portion is currently supported in DOCSIS 3.1 CMTSs.  Upstream OFDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiple access) is supported in the CPE side (aka cable modems), but only one CMTS vendor has support for upstream OFDMA.  This is really not considered a show stopper, however.
