Happy Friday Everyone. Today is January 18 and this is episode 44 of Get Your Tech On, our show on All Things DOCSIS. I’m Brady Volpe, Founder of The Volpe Firm and Nimble This. With us is, John Downey, the Ant Man of Cable. John is also CMTS Technical Leader at Cisco Systems, welcome John.

Today’s topic is a show discussing a full range of technology topics. But first…

On to technology in cable today.

  • What is new since we last talked?
  • I am seeing a lot of R-PHY deployments
  • Proactive network maintenance or PNM is getting huge in the industry – next issue of Broadband Library is dedicated to PNM

<Question From Watcher>
As new employee, I am learning the related technologies. My colleague recommended me the articles in your website and I like them very much. They are informative and very helpful for beginners like me. Also I noticed you held some meetings with Cisco expert and Arris expert, it is amazing how you put the competitors together and build the ecosystem of the cable industry!

Actually I am from wireless communication background, I noticed that so many physical layer technologies in current cable technologies are from wireless communications like OFDM/OFDMA, carrier binding, LDPC codes. I used to work as algorithm engineer to develop channel estimation algorithm. I have one question for Brady, so far, how well do we know the cable channel, is it possible we can use the frequency above 1G in cable? Can we also do channel estimation in cable in order to achieve higher data transmission rate? I hope we can fully exploit the cable channel as we did to the wireless channel?

Big Year for:

  • R-PHY
  • PNM and Optimization
  • DOCSIS 3.1
  • Open
